WJC To Name
Ex-Nazis In
UN Files
New York (JTA) — In the
wake of the United Nations'
refusal to open its archives
containing the files of thou-
sands of Nazi war criminals,
the World Jewish Congress
(WJC) announced last week
that it will make publicly
available the names, vital
statistics and criminal
charges against any in-
dividual listed in the UN files.
"The names of every in-
dividual in the UN files is on
a master list we have ob-
tained, and we will respond to
all inquiries seeking informa-
tion on theses individuals,"
WJC Secretary General Israel
Singer said.
According to Singer, the
WJC will confirm whether an
individual is listed in the UN
files and specify the nature,
place and date of crimes the
individual is charged with,
according to the files of those
charged with crimes and of
material witnesses. The files
were assembled by the UN
War Crimes Commission,
which operated in London
from 1943-48.
The UN had rejected an
Israeli request that the files
be opened to the public. The
WJC denounced the UN ac-
tion and said it would
respond by calling on its
national affiliates the Jewish
communities of 70 countries
to begin a global campaign to
have their governments de-
mand that UN open the files.
Secret Report
Criticizes
Lavi Project
'Ibl Aviv (JTA) — A secret
report by the State Com-
ptroller several months ago
warned that the Lavi fighter
plane project could seriously
impede the Israel Air Force
because off its rapidly es-
calating costs, and sharply
criticized the judgement and
decision-making process of all
involved with the Lavi,
Haaretz reported last Sunday.
According to the State
Comptroller, the cost of
developing the Lavi increased
by 148 percent between 1980
and 1985 and the estimated
production cost per unit
soared by 108 percent in the
same period.
The Comptroller's report
charged the Israel Defense
FForce General Staff and the
IDF Chief of Staff with
failure to grasp "the whole
picture" or to realize "the
damage to the IDF's overall
resources" financing the Lavi
would cause.
