Job Bias Victim
Compensated

New York — A nine-year
effort by the Baltimore chap-
ter of the American Jewish
Committee ended in an
agreement by the federal
government to provide
$185,000 in financial com-
pensation to Jewish workers
for the anti-Semitic bias that
hindered their promotions on
the job.
The agreement settled a
lawsuit started by the chap-
ter on behalf of Jewish em-
ployees of the Social Security
Administration (SSA).
The suit was started by
Robert Hyman, a Jewish
level GS-13 employee who
had applied, without success,
for promotion to a G-14 man-
agerial position on four occa-
sions. Each time, his name
appeared on a "best qual-
ified" list. At that point,
Hyman asked the chapter for
help.
In 1983, after several ap-
peals, the Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission
(EEOC) ruled that discrimi-
nation had existed against
Jews seeking promotions
above the G-13 level. The
SSA then agreed there had
been discrimination, but only
against Hyman and Edward
Richmond, another Jewish
employee who had been de-
nied promotion five times to
a G-15 position.
