Cabinet Debates
South Africa-
Israeli Ties

Jerusalem (JTA) — The in-
ner Cabinet decided last week
that Israel would not sign
any new security contracts
with South Africa. At the
same time, however, the Inner
Cabinet also decided that no
immediate cuts would be in-
troduced in the current
military trade. Israel would-
also reduce its overall rela-
tions with South Africa, the
Cabinet decided.
This was the first Israeli
response to the projected
action by the American Con-
gress against countries
extending military aid to
South Africa.
The Inner Cabinet decided
to set up a special team,
which would work out within
two months Israel's new
policy toward south Africa.
The decision was made at
the end of a lengthy, and
sometimes heated five-hour
debate. Ariel Sharon headed
the lobby in the Cabinet
against imposing any sanc-
tions on South Africa. He
said that Israel could face
American pressure s on the
issue.
But Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres supported tak-
ing action against South
Africa. He stresses the possi-
ble damage to Israel's inter-
national standing if it does
not join the West in steps
against South Africa..

Two Refuseniks
Released From
Labor Camps

New York (JTA) — Two
related long-term refuseniks
were released last week from
separate Soviet labor camps
and were headed home to
Odessa, according to Jerry
Strober, spokesperson for the
National Conference on
Soviet Jewry. They are Mark
Nepomniaschy, 55, and his
daughter's husband, Yakov
Levin, 27, both Jewish ac-
tivists and Hebrew teachers.
Levin was arrested at work
Aug. 12, 1984, five days prior
to his planned wedding to
Yehudit Nepomniaschy. Con-
victed of "antiSoviet slander,"
he was sentenced to three
years in Donetsk labor camp.
He married Yehudit there
June 7, 1985.
Her father was arrested in
Moscow on Oct. 11, 1984,
after having gone to seek the
intervention of Soviet of-
ficials and Western journal-
ists on Levin's behalf. He was
sentenced to three years in a
Ukrainian labor camp.
