tures. We haven't really been
able to do those things with
the first volume."
Mandel hopes to see an ex-
pansion of the Great Lakes
Books series, of which The
Jews of Detroit is a part. In-
augutated last fall, the series
includes new publications
and re-issued titles, with a
state or regional focus.
"I think one of our major
accomplishments last year
was establishing Great Lakes
Books," he says. "They're the
most viable of our books —
all of them can be found in
bookstores — and they're a
tremendous way of helping
finance the rest of our pro-
gram because they have a
much wider appeal and sell
better than the bulk of our
lists, which are scholarly
books and, by-and-large, are
marketed by direct mail."
What's next in Jewish
topics at WSU Press?
First, Mandel sees a need
for revision of a number of
classics which, written 20 or
more years ago, might be up-
dated by a different scholar
and more recent scholarship.
Secondly, he'd like to see
Jewish scholars breaking out
of what he calls "a Talmudic
quality" in Jewish studies.
"What is needed now, I
think, is to not think in such
narrow terms but to think
much more broadly. And I'm
finding in the younger gener-
ation a tendency to try to
look at broader topics, the
broader perspective. When I
first went to the Conference
of the Association of Jewish
Studies eight years ago, it
was like going to a seminary
association. Now, when you
go, you get a sprinkling of
topics brought to the Associa-
tion by people who are in
other fields — people who are
in literary theory, for in-
stance, who do Jewish
studies, or people in the field
of sociology who do Jewish
studies. You're seeing schol-
ars applying methodologies
taken from other fields and
applying them to Jewish
studies. You're not just get-
ting seminarians who go to
Yeshiva University. That's
one of the areas I really hope
to take Wayne in to — to
publish whA I call
`peripheral scholars' to
Jewish studies."
Meanwhile, the Press keeps
growing. Larger facilities are
being sought, and next year
Mandel anticipates the publi-
cation of 50 new titles. The
next year, he's planning on
60, then 70, then 80 ...
"My feeling is that you
have to publish at least 70
books a year to break even,
maybe more like 80," says
Mandel. "But the idea is to
get to that point. There are
only three or four university
presses doing that today. I'd
like to see Wayne become one
of them."❑
