North American immigrants
at a meeting organized by the
Association of American and
Canadian Immigrants to Is-
rael and the Soviet Jewry In-
formation Center Sunday
night.
Shcharansky, who came to
Israel in February, 1986 after
nine years in the Soviet
Gulag, said he thought it
would be a "dangerous prece-
dent" for Israel to ask the
United States to abolish spe-
cial refugee status for Jews
leaving the Soviet Union.
"I have no doubt that the
best place for a Jew to live is
in Israel, but I don't want
anyone brought here against
his will," Shcharansky said.
In this he is at odds with
Premier Yitzhak Shamir and
other Israeli leaders who
have been urging the U.S. to
abolish refugee status in
order to make it more dif-
ficult for Soviet Jewish
emigres to go to the U.S. in-
stead of to Israel.

Picket Herzog

Jerusalem (JTA) — Av-
inadav Lippa and Gabi
Weissman, Holocaust sur-
vivors, demonstrated Monday
against President Chaim
Herzog's state visit to West
Germany next month.
Wearing the striped garb
of concentration camp in-
mates, they picketed outside
the Binyanei Haooma con-
vention hall where a
Jerusalem district court is
convened for the trial of al-
leged war criminal John De-
mjanjuk.
They urged the president
"not to shake the hands of
the murderers in Germany."

Eban Declines
Washington

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Abba
Eban has politely declined a
proposal that he become Is-
rael's next Ambassador to the
United States, a post he held
with distinction from 1950-
1959.
The suggestion was made
by Likud MK Eliahu Ben-
Elissar that one of the three
former envoys to Washington
now in the Knesset be named
to succeed the current Am-
bassador Meir Rosenne, in-
asmuch as Labor and Likud
have been unable to agree on
a successor. In addition to
Eban, former ambassador-
MK are Simcha Dinitz and
Moshe Arens.
Asked by an Israel Radio
reporter if he would take the
job, Eban replied, "No,
thanks." The same response
is expected from Dinitz and
Arens.
