Interment De- lray Beach. Peter Weisberg leaves a legacy for Jewish devotion, a pride in his Americanism and a religious enthusiasm shared with his lifetime of Zionism and activism for Is- rael. This summarizes in some measure the notable re- cord of his life, recalled in eulogies occasioned by his passing at the age of 96 on Saturday. Tribute to his memory was expressed on Monday at fun- eral services in the main sanctuary of Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Mr. Weisberg had a life of devotion. He loved to conduct religious services, whether it was in Shaarey Zedek or while on a cruise from New York to Haifa. The Jewish National Fund was among his major beneficiaries and the Peter and Clara Weisberg Forest in Israel attests to it. There isn't a pro-Israel cause in which he did not share. That included the United Jewish Appeal and Is- rael Bonds. The Allied Jewish Campaign of Detroit marked his share in the many scores of local and na- tional causes. He made certain at every weekday Shaarey Zedek serv- ice there was the traditional blue and white box to assure gifts to JNF. Mr. Weisberg was the founder and chairman of Chatham Supermarkets. He came to Pittsburgh from Czarist Russia at the age of 22 and moved to Detroit in 1923. He and his wife opened a small meat market in 1947 which eventually grew into the Chatham chain. Mr. Weisberg had a great love for music, with an em- phasis on the prayers in the synagogue services. That in- spired his son Harvey, in 1980 when he was president of Shaarey Zedek, to begin sponsorship of the Peter and Clara Weisberg Concerts. They draw more than 3,000 at each annual performance at Shaarey Zedek. Mr. Weisberg was also a supporter of the Zionist Phone 368-3550 Over 60 Years in Same Location! JEWISH NATIONAL FUND 18877 W.
