Ryan, Jr., nation- ally known author, lecturer and commentator, will be the second speaker in the Holocaust Memorial Center's Spring Series on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Adat Shalom Synagogue. In 1979, Ryan was named as director of the Justice De- partment's newly created Office of Special Investiga- tions and was responsible for the investigation and pros- ecution of Nazi war criminals in America, including Vale- rian Trifa in Detroit. In 1983, Ryan served as special assistant to the At- torney General and conducted the international investiga- tion of Klaus Barbie's ties to the U.S. government. Ryan has been awarded the rank of Meritorious Executive by President Ronald Reagan for "outstanding achievement and noteworthy public serv- ice." In 1986, Ryan received the Human Rights Award of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, New England Region. He is now with the Counsel General's office at Harvard University. Ryan's presentation is entitled "An Inside Look at the Demjanjuk Trial." Ar- rangements for Ryan's lec- ture were made through the B'nai B'rith International Lecture Bureau. Immediately following Passover, the series will con- clude with the screening of Eberhard Fechner's five-hour film, Der Prozess (The Trial) with English sub-titles. Parts I and II of Der Pro- zess which documents the Majdanek trial will be shown on April 22 at 6 p.m. in the Allan Ryan, Jr. Studio Theater of the Jewish Community Center. The conclusion of the film will be shown on April 23 at 6 p.m. in the Jewish Com- munity Center's Shiffman Hall. The evening will in- clude a panel discussion featuring Dr. Ronald Hollo- way, Berlin-based correspon- dent; Prof. Peter Behrens, University of Hamburg, Germany, and currently visit- ing professor at the Univer- sity of Michigan; Professor Geoffrey Eley, University of Michigan; Dr. Guy Stern, Wayne State University; and Rabbi Charles Rosenzveig, founder and executive vice president of the Holocaust Memorial Center. Gary Torgow, chairman of Machon L'Torah, announced that the Jewish Learning Network of Michigan, in con- junction with the Torah Insti- tute of America, will initiate the "Israel-USA Connection" scholarship program. Participants, prior to de- parting for Israel, will meet for a period of two weeks in a sprawling resort complex in Moodus, Conn., for an educa- tional orientation and rec- reational program. Leading educators will pro- vide background and insight into understanding Israel: its land, its language, its his- tory; its culture, and its people. Facilities are avail- able for recreational activi- ties, including soccer, tennis, swimming, basketball and jogging. Participants will then fly to Israel to continue the "hands-on-Israel" experience. The program will be based at Machon Shlomo's campus in Jerusalem and will include traditional Jewish study on such topics as Talmud, Torah (Bible), philosophy, Jewish laws and customs and more.
