health, stress and timing are the
critical issues that physicians
look for to determine whether an
individual is a suitable candidate
for plastic surgery. Suntanning
has been particularly harmful to
women, Dr. Argenta believes,
and so has smoking. "Smoking
causes little vessels to stress and
go into spasm," he says. With a
face lift, a woman who has
smoked a pack of cigarettes a
day has an eight to ten times
greater chance of complications
from bleeding.
"We turn down a lot of people
for surgery in our department.
They should have a right to
expect something reasonable.
Unfortunately, we also get a lot of
other doctors' mistakes that
come here to be revised and
corrected," says U-M's Dr.
Argenta. He worries about
patients, or physicians, who want
to "hurry up" the procedure or
show too great a sense of
urgency about it.
"I think that the patient should
know the extent of the plastic
surgeon's training and whether
he has been board certified,"
