Encounter '87, a tour of Is-

The tour will go to Israel
May 21 to June 7. Partici-

linking the bicentennial cele-

Shirman Dies
Of Leukemia

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Michael
Shirman, the leukemia-
suffering immigrant from the
Soviet Union whose sister's
departure from the Soviet
Union to serve as a bone-
marrow transplant donor was
delayed by the Moscow
authorities for a year, died in
the Kaplan Hospital in Re-
hovot March 5.
Shirman, born in a town
near Minsk in 1954, came to
Israel with his mother in
1980. He was found to be suf-
fering from Leukemia 18
months ago and it was estab-
lished that his sister, Inessa
Florova, living in Moscow,
was the only possible compat-
ible marrow doner.
But her application for an
exit permit for her and her
husband was repeatedly re-
jected by the Soviet
authorities for over a year.
The transplant was carried
out two and a half months
ago and doctors said it had
been successful as far as the
actual procedure went. But
they expressed concern that
the marrow transplant might
have been too late to effect a
cure or cause a meaningful
remission of the blood cancer.
