Ruth Ann Rott
Is Bat Mitzvah

Ruth Ann Rott celebrated
her bat mitzvah, which she
shared with her twin, Yona
Royak, on March 7 at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek.
Ruth Ann, daughter of
Carol and Sheldon Rott, re-
cited her portions for Yona
who lives in Bendery, Mol-
davia, and cannot celebrate
her bat mitzvah in the Soviet
Union.
Yona is the only child of
Viachesfav and Irina Royak.
Royak applied to emigrate to
Israel in 1976. A computer
scientist who suffers from
diabetes, Royak was denied
permission to emigrate be-
cause he "possessed state
secrets." He has been re-
peatedly harassed at his
place of employment,
threatened with 7 1/2 years of
confinement in a hospital,
and accused of falsifying
medical certificates.
When a notebook with He-
brew writing was found in
his desk, it was seized and
used to threaten him further.
Despite harassment, Royak
found the courage to sign a
letter congratulating Israel
on a recent anniversary. Yo-
na's mother is a French
teacher. The family has rela-
tives living in Afula and
Haifa, Israel.
