toward the woman's equally
elderly husband, "because he
stopped doing it 20 years
ago."
But that same sort of
freewheeling response has al-
ready put Adler in hot water
with station management
and some of his viewers.
For the first months of
Adler's show, the negative
phone calls ran to about
three out of ten. Most were of
the "who is that guy on the
air?" variety. Later, the ratio
dropped to about two out of
ten and the callers were say-
ing things like "boy, is he
ever awful."
Now it's down to one out of
ten, but that one caller is
saying "get him off the air;
he makes me sick." But at
least Adler's drawing a reac-
tion.
The station has expanded
Adler's airtime from the orig-
inal five minutes to 7 1/2 min-
utes, but when Adler gets on
a roll, he's gone as long as 14
minutes. If the producers
start prodding him to get off
the air to make room for
Channel 9's latenight movie,
Adler is likely to reply on-air
"say, it's only a movie."
He still laments having to
give up the regular track an-
nouncing post at Windsor
Raceway, claiming he lost
$20,000 by taking on the
sportscast. But he knows he
can make up for that loss,
and a lot more, if he jumps to
a U.S. station.
"I wouldn't mind getting
into the Detroit market," he
says, "but I don't know if
there's a place for my kind of
sports in that market. I be-
lieve I'm more entertainment
than I am sports or a jour-
nalist. So my thing is let me
try and make it interesting
for people. Sure, you're going
to get a schlockly presenta-
tion of the sports, but it'll be
entertaining. And I'm more
than just a talking head. This
is a visual medium. If it
wasn't visual, I might as well
just be on radio. Or do it from
a booth. The idea is that this
is television, So let's play
television. Like Soupy would
have done."
