DANNY RASKIN
FIESTA MUSIC ... festi-
val rhythms ... the kind that
makes you forget everything
and enjoy such musical gai-
ety.
It is now at Armando's, Or-
chard Lake Road between 12
and 13 Mile ... Sundays
through Thursdays, 6 p.m. to
9 p.m. ... with 7-piece strol-
ling Mariachi Al Teno band
• . two violins, two trumpets,
lead guitar, bass guitar and
lead singer ... A third vio-
linist will join the troupe
after an illness bout is over.
All sing also ... in the
music that brings so much
glowing happiness ... Name
originated in Mexico about
1824 with mariachi meaning
fiesta in Mexican ... Saga
has it that the French
brought about its inception
• . The group plays and sings
mainly Mexican hooplas,
romantics, etc. ... but every
so often will also break out
with "San Francisco", "More",
"My Way" "Strangers In The
Night" ... Italian tunes,
Greek melodies and as much
as they can of the many re-
quests received ... even pol-
kas and country music.
Owner Armando Galan
brought them here from
Mexico City ... and they're
going over with a loud bang
... They worked for Armando
back in 1982 when he still
had his other place on Vernor
Hwy.
The group is also very big
on private parties ... and are
in demand for outside affairs
... Speaking of outside, when
the warm weather comes,
you'll probably see them by
Orchard Lake Road or in
front of Armando's restau-
rant.
All wear the same uniform
except their singer ..„ Man-
uel Zaragoza came here from •
Mexico in March of 1954 and
has remained- ... He opened
the La Gloria Bakery on Bag-
ley, making Mexican pas-
tries.
Mariachi Al Teno group
also has four brothers (two
violins, bass guitar and lead
guitar) ... A cousin plays one
of the trumpets.
The brothers started their
musical aggregation in
Mexico, 1963 ... Director
brother Luis Ortiz plays the
viguaela (lead guitar).
Armando's is much better
than when it first opened ...
The food is tastier and more
attention is paid to customers
... Reason for this is because
Armando himself isn't trying
to be in two restaurants at
the same time, so to speak
... He no longer has the one
on Vernor Hwy ... and con-
centrates all his efforts to
uno ... the former Starboard
Tack, Eastman's Landing,
Darlin' Lilly's and Chef
Theodore's.
It's a clean place ... with
Lattice woodwork, wrought
iron, ceramic tile tabletops,
hanging plants, lanterns, real
cactus plant, leaded stained
glass doors leading into re-
strooms, smooth stucco walls,
arches, pottery tiles on simu-
lated roofs, ceramic tiles
along ledges, etc.
There are five rooms plus
lounge with fireplace, tables
and bar ... Seating at Ar-
mando's is 160.
Ed Meyers is night man-
ager Tuesdays through Sun-
days ... Arnie Wiener comes
in a couple nights a week to
help out.
People can now order from
the menu ... or take all they
can eat from a sumptuous
Fiesta Dinner Buffet ... with
Cajun-style beef, Cajun-style
chicken, Spanish rice, burger
nachos, enchiladas, tacos,
burritos, tostados, fried pinto
beans, hot sauces, Mexican
salads, cole slaw, fresh fruit,
etc., etc ... On Fridays, the
buffet also has scrod.
Armando worked for Les
Gruber in 1960 at the London
Chop House ... In 1968, he
opened Armando's on Vernor
Hwy ... May 6 will be a year
that Armando opened on Or-
chard Lake Road between 12
and 13 Mile.
You might call it the new
Armando's ... because that is
what it seems to be now.
Sunday brunch is 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m. ... and buffet 4
p.m. to 10 p.m. ... The eve-
ning buffet seven nights a
week from 6 p.m. is like a
Mexican fiesta ... with the
Mariachi music Sunday
through Thursday lending a
very festive mood.
Armando's is open Monday
through Thursday 11 a.m. to
10 p.m. ... Friday and
Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
... and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10
p.m.
It is most apparent ... the
difference that has taken
place at Armando's.
HE'S A CELEBRITY
himself ... some years back
being among the contenders
for world's middleweight box-
ing title.
Today, Joe Adair in
Newark picks up almost
everybody ... but not from
the ring floor ... Notables
and others know his limos
and vans are waiting for
them at the airport to take
the folks into New York ...
It's called Joe Adair's
Limousine Service (201-289-
6037) ... One of his best cus-
tomers, clothier Harry Ko-
sins, calls him from Detroit
and Joe is there at the
Newark airport in his van fil-
led with cokes, candy, cake,
(
