He subbed for movie host Conrad Patrick and got to interview Mr. Belvedere on commercials ("I'm glad you asked me that Marty") and eventually wound up as co-host with Marilyn McKay (now a Channel 56 producer) of an afternoon pre-Kelly and Company interview show called Insight. Adler interviewed everyone from Woody Allen to Billy Graham during the three years he co-hosted Insight. He's proud of the offbeat in- terviews he conducted for the show adding "they were so offbeat they didn't want me on the show any longer." So they told Adler he be- longed in latenight television and instead gave him the job of hosting Reach for the Top, a local show pitting teams from high schools against each other to see which school team could answer the most questions correctly. After nine years of hosting that show, Adler says "the station offered me as much money in my tenth year as I got in my first, and I thought it was an insult. I was told things like we've got you for eight hours a day and we can do with you as we please. You want to be a star? You want to be on TV? You'll do it. "I didn't do it." So it was back to the tele- vision booth for another five years where all Adler ever got to say was "this is CBC Windsor, Channel 9." He says it was "like being banished to Siberia. You still made your money but nobody sees you. And you're there in the booth for eight hours a day." But meanwhile, Channel 9's owners, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC), which is run by the federal government, drastically slashed the station's staff. While Adler was putting his booth time in, he set up a video production company. Great Lakes - Riverton, which he says is the only production company of its kind between Windsor and Toronto. When the staff cuts hit CBET-TV, Adler talked one of the station's top pro- ducers, Terry MacDonald, into joining his outside firm. Today, Great Lakes - River- ton produces the Windsor Raceway show which Adler hosts on CBET-TV, and which is shown every Mon- day across the U.S on the PASS sports cable network. Adler's big break came in the summer of 1985.
