the trouble groups like

having in attracting young
people. The activities of
both organizations gener-
ally revolve around fund
raising for projects in Is-
rael. With more and more
women working, fewer are
able to devote their time
to volunteer work. "People
today aren't willing to find
the time," Weingarden
complains.
Missing, also, is an or-
ganic link to veteran
Zionist organizations. "A
lot of these people have no
Jewish, Yiddish, Zionist
background," she adds.
Jerry Cook is the 44-
year-old president of De-
troit's American Jewish
Congress chapter. "When I
joined after law school, the
older people made it very
clear that they were tired
and were- eager to bring
younger people into these
roles," he says. "They we-
ren't going to horde these
roles."
Cook says the veteran
defense group combines
the energy of its younger
members with the wisdom
of its older members.
Membership rolls were
augmented recently by a
successful direct mail
campaign from AJC head-
quarters in Washington,
D.C., he adds.
Despite it's unclear
ideological direction, Judy
Loebl is optimistic that
she and her peers will be
able to hand a Labor
Zionist Alliance over to
their children "by hook or
by crook."
"We're getting to an age
where our children will be
able to (join a youth
group) and we'll want
them to grow up with
what we had."
