sure," Mann explains. "About
90 percent of the Jews left
Romania in the '60s."
Mandelbaum came to the
U.S. because her parents
wanted her to grow up in a
Jewish environment. Most
Jews were leaving Cuba then
and "my mother feared there
wouldn't be enough Jews for
me to get married. Politi-
cally, by the time I left, kids
were required to to 40 days of
voluntary work in the coun-
tryside."
Her brother had emigrated
in 1960. When the rest of the
family applied for exit visas,
her mother received permis-
sion first, "but she would not
leave without me. We
thought it was an excuse to
separate us."
When Ann received per-
mission, mother and daugh-
ter left together. Ann's father
stayed behind, hoping to join
his family. "In 1979, mother,
George and myself went back
to Cuba and got him out." -
Mann and Mandelbaum
were introduced by mutual
friends. They married in
1975.
Although born and raised
on different continents, the
two attribute their similar
views and interests to their
common East European
Jewish backgrounds (Ann's
family moved to Cuba from
Poland around 1928), their
experience as immigrants,
and their legacy of being
raised in Communist
societies. "We're probably in-
terested in the ZOA because,
coming from Communist
countries, we understand
what a powerful engine free
enterprise is," Mann muses.
Both speak fluent English
with lingering accents, but
their foreign birth is man-
ifested in other ways. "Today,
I still cannot walk on ice,"
Mandelbaum says laughing.
For Mann, their "European
outlook is one of the reasons
we have such a great need to
travel. The American
perspective is not enough to
satisfy our needs."
Their cosmopolitan nature
has led them to visit some 40
countries, often with the AJ-
Committee. They plan an up-
coming journey with the AJC
to Jewish communities in
Panama and Guatemala. "It's
very important to reach out
to these little communities,"
Mann maintains.
What is the attraction of a
group like Detroit Young
Zionists to a young Jew to-
day? Mandelbaum uses as an
example her friends, who
have worked their entire
adult lives to achieve mate-
rial security. "After you have
the comfort, you feel there
has to be something else.
There's a reevaluation of
what it means to be a Jew.
