TORAH PORTION
Golden
Calf
Continued from preceding page
Fathers, anxious to discredit
Judaism, the Gold Calf
episode sent them proof that
the Divine Covenant with Is-
rael had never been consum-
mated.
On reflection, every gener-
ation since that time has had
its golden calf. Because of the
glitter and the glamor, people
yield to something more eas-
ily attainable than an ideal,
a hope, a faith. Even today,
there are people who make
idols of wealth, station or
pleasure.
Thank God there are also
people with standards, people
with values! I truly believe
that in every age, there are
people who are faithful and
willing to be patient enough
for Moses to return from the
mountaintop. They are the
sincere ones who stand un-
daunted in the midst of crisis,
who have a faith to believe
in, who do their daily tasks
without complaint, and are
confident that in God's own
good time a better world can
be built by working at it.
