U.S. Accuses
2 Israelis Of
Insider Trading

New York (JTA) — The
United States government
last week filed charges in
Federal District Court here,
accusing two Israeli citizens
with insider trading on Wall
Street.
According to the charges,
Nahum Vaskevitch, a top ex-
ecutive of Merrill Lynch and
Company, who holds dual
Israeli and British citizen-
ship, and David Sofer, an
Israeli investor, made more
than US $4 million in illegal
profits over two years.
It was reported that the
Securities and Exchange
Commission charged the
38-year old Vaskevitch with
tipping Sofer to 12 or more
deals, or potential deals, in-
volving Merrill Lynch.
Sofer, 46, reportedly a part
owner of the Jerusalem
Hilton Hotel, was charged
with trading on the takeover
information through two cor-
porations, Plenmeer Ltd. in
England and Meda Estab-
lishment in Liechtenstein. He
also was charged with direct-
ing two friends to trade in the
securities and shared in the
more than US $400,000 pro-
fit.
Vaskevitch is based in Lon-
don where he is the head of
international mergers and
acquisitions at Merrill Lynch
and Company.

Visa Problems

New York (JTA) — India's
Jews have asked Prime
Minister Rajiv Gandhi to
intercede on behalf of their
Israeli relatives facing diffi-
culties in seeking to visit In-
dia, the World Jewish, Con-
gress reported.
In a letter to Gandhi, Prof.
Nissim Ezekiel, president of
the Council of Indian Jewry,
outlined the problems that
Jews of Indian origin living
in Israel have in obtaining a
visa to come to India.
In Ezekiel's letter he
pointed out that until 1983
"our relations desirous of vis-
iting India and Bombay were
having no problem what-
soever," noting that upon ar-
rival to any Indian airport
visas for a 30-day stay were
routinely issued by the In-
dian authorities.
But a change in the proce-
dure since then required that
visas be obtained in advance
from an Indian embassy
abroad. Because there is no
Indian embassy in Israel,
Ezekiel noted, "our relations
and ourselves find it ex-
tremely difficult to meet in
India."
