There is Fungus
Among Us

Jerusalem — Scientists at
the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem's Faculty of Ag-
riculture in Rehovot have suc-
ceeded in isolating a fungus,
Ampelomyces quisqualis,
which is parasitic upon other
fungi, and which they see as
being able to considerably re-
duce the serious damage to ag-
ricultural crops caused by po-
wdery mildew disease.
This fungal disease seriously
affects the development and
yields of fruit trees, grain,
flowers and vegetable crops. At
present, control of this and
similar diseases is carried out
using chemicals, which are ex-
pensive and tend to pollute the
environment.
In experiments in the lab-
oratory, in greenhouses and in
the open field, the application
of the Ampelomyces quisqualis
parasitic fungus brought about
a significant decrease in the
incidence of powdery mildew in
various crops, particularly
cucumber plants. Plants
treated with this fungus gave
considerably higher yields
than did untreated plants with
which they were compared.

Herzog Wins
Dutch Honor

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A visitor
from the Netherlands confer-
red the title of "Liberator" on
President Chaim Herzog at his
office, recalling a little known
episode in World War II when
Israel's Chief of State was an
officer in the British army.
Heiko Hieberge is mayor of
Enschede, a town in the
Netherlands which Herzog is
credited with liberating from
Nazi occupation. In 1944, the
Irish-born Herzog was leading
a patrol east of the Rhine. He
entered Enschede by mistake.
But the presence of the
British soldiers triggered an
uprising of th anti-Nazi under-
ground and German forces in
the area promptly surren-
dered.
