that Syria will try to rein in
the PLO, their master plan is
to replace the PLO with
themselves as the destroyer
of Israel.
Syria's goal is to annihilate
the Jewish state and incorpo-
rate the Land of Israel into
"Greater Syria." Crushing
Lebanon brings Syria closer
to satisfying its lust, and
shoves the Middle East
towards another bloody con-
flagration .. .

Pollard Affair
Raises Questions
When the Pollard story
first broke, many in the
Jewish community took a
very strong public stand
against him. Now that the
case is closed I think it is
time to put this incident in
an historical perspective.
Regarding the severity of
the damage which Pollard
caused our country, I think
everyone will agree that this
was far from being "the crime
of the century." I need not re-
call that the Walker family
wasn't exactly selling Col.
Sander's secret recipe to the
Russians.
It is important to make a
distinction between spying on
the Arabs and the USSR via
U.S. intelligence sources and
spying on the U.S. per se.
Why wasn't the U.S. sup-
plying the information which
Israel needed in the first
place? Jonathan Pollard is
quoted as having said that
the U.S. would give enough
information to Israel "to
make it paranoid" but not
enough information for Israel
to be able to defend itself. Is
this the policy of an ally?
I think that it would only
be fair for those who have
joined in the attacks on Pol-
lard and Israel now to ad-
dress these issues.

The Pollard affair should
be cause for dismaY and
great concern to American
Jews .
What is one to make of this
scandal, which Abba Eban
has called the worst crisis in
the history of Israel-United
States relations? Is it possible
that ranking Israeli govern-
ment officials were ignorant
of the spy operation? And
what is one to make of the
position of Israel's political
leaders that, beyond profuse
apologies, there will be no
independent investigation of
the incident and no real
punishment of wrongdoers?
For the security of Israel
and the preservation of its
vital relationship to the
United States, American
Jews should protest long and
loud against this outrage. It
is bad enough that the inci-
dent fuels the lie that Ameri-
can Jews are afflicted with
dual loyalties. It is even
worse that this cynical and
stupid spy operation jeopar-
dizes the security of Israel .. .
The security of the State of
Israel is not synonymous
with the preservation of its
present political leadership.
The vital interests of Israel
and its American Jewish
supporters have been badly
damaged by this shameful af-
fair, and American Jews
should be in the forefront of
demanding that the Govern-
ment of Israel order a full in-
dependent investigation into
the matter and that responsi-
ble individuals be held
strictly accountable for their
misdeeds.

Age No Barrier
To Performance
The profile of me by Be-
verly Wolkind (Feb. 27) was
very complimentary ... I feel
it has created a host of good
feelings among my contem-
poraries. I was instrumental
in trying to encourage them
to greater participation that
is made available in our
community ...
The article showed that age
is no barrier to performance.
There are still hills to climb

Spicehandler's
Answer Ques-
I refer to the March 6 let-
ter by Ezra Spicehandler, na-
tional president of the Labor
Zionist Alliance, which pur-
ports to rebut my criticism
(Jan. 9) of the dubious elec-
tioneering tactics of Friends
of Labor Israel in connection
with the upcoming World
Zionist Congress.
The fact that the Area
Elections Committee of the
American Zionist Federation,
which supervises the Con-
gress election process, has
ruled to disallow Friends of
Labor Israel from participa-
tion in the elections is an
indication that its bona fides
are open to serious question.
The Herzlian Shekel to
which Spicehandler alluded
in his letter has been many
years ago incorporated in the
membership dues of Zionist
organizations. His claim that
Friends of Labor Israel did
appear on the ballot to the
30th Zionist Congress is
hardly convincing. No elec-
tions were held to that Con-
gress, the delegates having
been apportioned by prior
agreement among the Zionist
organizations.
