David Lanceberg, in his Wroclaw, Poland
clothing shop, survived the war in
Tashkent Uzbekistan. His is the only
privately owned Jewish business in
the city.

me, as long as there's a minyan, there will
be Jewish life."
And beyond that, who knows? In a pre-
face to the book, Prof. George Schwab of
the City University of New York, asks,
"Can the vigor, vitality and zest that still
characterizes Jewish life in East/Central
Europe suffice to spark a renaissance, a re-
juvenation? Logic says no. Yet history is
known to deceive reason."
What history has in store is what Strom
intends to find out by continuing to visit
Eastern Europe, first to make a documen-
tary film and then to do a book focusing
on three or four of the towns he studied.
He also wants to go back because he's got
a girlfriend in. Kracow.
But girlfriend or not, Eastern Europe,
said Strom, should be a place all American
Jews go to see for themselves. "You can go
to the Lower East Side or Boro Park or
Bnei Brak. They're okay but this is culture
in its natural habitat. This is Jewish life
as it's been lived for more than 1,000
years."
And in being that, he said, there is much
to learn. And because it's still around,
despite everything, there is even more to

learn. "It gives you a sense of how those
who are tenacious can persevere against all
odds to maintain a culture. Here are Jews
under extreme difficulty, doing just that.
We can learn from them how to stay Jews.
We can learn about ourselves, our grand-
parents. Anyone who says he can't learn is
hopeless."
What Strom learned, he said, is to "ap-
preciate living in the United States and to
think more strongly about Israel as the
home for Jews. I appreciate more the
things I learned from my parents and the
things I want to pass on to my children."
As for what he felt while learning all
that, Strom said, "I feel honored to be a
Jew and know that thousands of Jews in
Europe are keeping their kehillot robust.
lb be able to play a wedding was like go-
ing back 100 years. lb see the smiles meant
so much to me. It's an experience I will
never be able to duplicate, a gem to
treasure.
"I became one of them. It was like see-
ing life before the Holocaust, being part of
such a rich culture that has added so much
to world culture.
"I felt happy, but sad. It is incredible to
think that so many were killed and no one
raised a finger to help. This book is my way
of contributing to the survival of Eastern
European Jews.
"It's my way of saying that we must
never forget the Jews who are not still
there. And we must never forget the Jews
who are still there." 11]
