First, it would be the height
of legal and moral irresponsi-
bility for society to suggest
that those who participated in
these crimes can escape ac-
countability simply on the
basis that 40 years have
passed.
Second, granting "absolu-
tion" would imply forgiveness
— forgiving the unforgiveable
— and leave a very unsettling
implication for the rest of the
world to interpret.
Third, the Holocaust was no
ordinary crime; it cannot be
equated to the suspect who
may have committed a bank
robbery and then went into
hiding to lead the life of a "good
citizen"
And finally, there is no ques-
tion to what some refer to as a
statute of limitations. The
courts can battle the
arguments whether a legal
limitation exists in such cases
but it is for the world to estab-
lish a moral standard.
That standard should state
— and state clearly and un-
equivocally — that there is not
and never shall be a moral sta-
tute of limitations on the
Holocaust.
Only such an uncompromis-
ing standard will affirm the re-
solve of the world that those
responsible will be held ac-
countable and help serve as as-
surance that a Holocaust will
never be permitted to occur
again.
