THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
The following profile by
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion is part of a series on the
people who benefit from the
Allied Jewish Campaign.
Joe Schreiber, age 73.
In his younger days, he was
a championship bowler, poet
and inventor. Now that he's
retired and living at the
Hechtman Federation
Apartments in West Bloom-
field, Joe Schreiber has
found other outlets for his
zest and creativity. Among
them are playing pool or
poker with his friends,
attending Shabbat services
in the chapel, and reaching
out to those in need.
"This is a wonderful place
for a senior citizen," says
Schreiber. "I like being with
people of my own religion,
and it's so leibidick here." A
quiet, introspective man,
Schreiber says he was ill be-
fore he moved to the apart-
ments shortly after the
facility opened three years
ago. He describes himself as
"somewhat confused" at
that time and says that all
the activity at Hechtman
has helped him. He is espe-
cially proud of two things:
the beautiful, peaceful view
from his apartment, and his
friendship with one of the
handicapped residents of the
apartments, who Schreiber
enjoys being with and help-
ing with small chores. All
in all, he says he is content
with his life. "Being all by
yourself is sad," Schreiber
says. "I'm glad I'm able to
live here."
The agency. Serving
Joe Schreiber
nearly 400 senior adults
who can live independently,
the Jewish Federation
Apartments has two loca-
tions: Prentis Towers in
Oak Park and the
Hechtman Federation
Apartments in West Bloom-
field. The bright, modern
apartments are designed for
people of low to moderate
incomes and are subsidized
by the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban De-
velopment.
The two locations each
offer a central dining room
where kosher dinners are
served, and a variety of spe-
cial programs, lectures, and
field trips. JFA receives
funding through the Jewish
Welfare Federation's Allied
Jewish Campaign.
