Local travel agents will
have the opportunity to learn
about Israel as a tourist des-
tination March 26, at a mar-
keting seminar and trade
show to be held at the Dear-
born Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Sponsored by the Israel
Government Tourists Office
and El Al and Trans-World
Airlines, the trade show is
one of four to be held around
the Midwest, according to
Jacob Daker, regional direc-
tor of the Israel Government
Tourists Office.
The trade fair is part of a
nation-wide campaign, and
will give travel agents the
opportunity to meet with Is-
raeli tour operators and hotel
representatives. Orientation
and briefing sessions will in-
troduce new tour packages. A
panel of experts will answer
agents' questions.
Usually held in Southfield,
the fair's Dearborn venue is a
bid to reach travel agents in
places like Toledo and Ann
Arbor, explained Lynn Kop-
pinger, El Al Airline's resi-
dent sales manager for
Michigan. Organizers hope to
reach a wider market than
just Jewish travel agents, she
added.
The government tourism
office sent out 2,000 invita-
tions to the region's travel
agents. About 500 of the
invitations—whose dark blue
cover resembles an Israeli
passport—were sent to the
Detroit area, Daker said.
"Our number one aim is to
assure (the agents) about the
safety of travel to Israel," he
said, noting that the volume
of tourism to Israel has in-
creased over the past two
months. "Also, it's important
for them to learn about Is-
rael. We would like to
enlarge the number of travel
agents who are sending pe-
ople to Israel."
