aged to bring upon itself the
worst-case scenario.

In Israel, meanwhile, the
Knesset Tuesday easily de-
feated three no-confidence mo-
tions over the government's
handling of the Jonathan Pol-
lard affair. Only one coalition
member, Mordechai Vir-
shubsky of the Shinui Party,
crossed lines to vote with the
opposition.
MK Abba Eban announced
that his Knesset Foreign Af-
fairs and Security Committee's
special subcommittee would
begin a probe into the affair.
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir sought to distance Is-
rael from Pollard. Speaking to
reporters during a visit to Mig-
dal Ha'emek Tuesday, he said
that the Pollard family's predi-
cament "may be a humanita-
rian problem or a moral prob-
lem but it is not a problem with
which the State of Israel has to
concern itself."

Sella 'Spied
For U.S.;
Maariv Claims

Aviv (JTA) — Under a
page one banner headline
reading "Col. Sella Spied For
Americans," Maariv wrote
last week that Col. Aviem
Sella, reported to have been
the man who handled Jona-
than Pollard and whose ap-
pointment to head a major
Israel Air Force base has
aroused anger in the U.S., was
the first pilot to photograph
the Soviet mobile anti-air-
craft missile SA-6, and his
photographs were immediate-
ly relayed to the U.S. and con-
stituted a major contribution
to American intelligence.
Sella also participated in an
air battle against Soviet
pilots in July 1970 over the
Suez Canal, during which he
downed a MIG-21 Soviet jet
fighter.

Jordan Invites
Waldheim For
Official Visit

Vienna (JTA) — Jordan is
the first nation to invite
President Kurt Waldheim for
an official visit since he was
elected last July after a cam-
paign during which his Nazi
past was exposed, according
to reports last week.
Waldheim's virtual isola-
tion by the international com-
munity was broken by Jor-
dan's King Hussein, who is in
Austria on a skiing holiday.
They had a 75-minute meet-
ing at the Hofburg Palace,
after which the President's
Office announced that the
King extended an invitation
for a State visit to Jordan
later this year.
