Mirror Master MOST FOOT TROUBLE IS SHOE TROUBLE! gular shaped pastry which represents Haman's ears. These are usually included in the "mishloach manot," pa- rcels of sweets, cakes and other homemade goodies that are given as gifts at Purim. Purim is still officially a working day in Israel, though in recent years more and more individuals and organ- izations have been taking it as a holiday. Many go to the synagogue to hear the Book of Esther read and children drown out the name of Haman whenever it is men- tioned. Purim is also a time for fancy dress parties. Practical jokes are popular at Purim, rather like April Fool's Day. The newspapers print spoof editions, and more subtly deceiving are bogus items slipped deftly into the radio news bulletins. Many Israelis were upset to hear on Kol Yisrael Radio at Purim several years ago that the Eurovision song contest win- ning tune Hallelujah was to replace the Hatikvah as the national anthem. Even more were upset by reports that the dollar would replace the shekel as the country's cur- rency! Last year a fake report on Galei Zahal, the army radio station, resulted in the dismissal of the soldier re- sponsible. But essentially Purim is a time of fun, an opportunity for Israelis to forget about everyday pressures and in- dulge in tricks and treats and the odd glass of wine. New Support Shown For Linnas Deportation Washington (JTA) — Moves for the deportation of convicted Nazi war criminal Carl Linnas picked up fresh support on Capital Hill last week as several Congressman signed a letter to Attorney General Edwin Meese III urging he act immediately. Meese told the House Judi- ciary Committee that Linnas' deportation was being de- layed for 30 days on a plea from Linnas' lawyer, Ramsey Clark, who is seeking to find a country that will accept him. Linnas, a New York resi- dent, faces deportation to the Soviet Union where he faces the death penalty. "I don't think that's our responsibility," said Rep. William Lehman (D. Fla.), who along with Sen. Lawton Chiles (D.Fla.), initiated the letter. "I understand Clark's (point), but we have laws and legislation in this country and we can't predicate our justice system on someone else's." May we be of service?
