Simcha Sorin
David Aaron Graham of
West Bloomfield will twin his
bar mitzvah with Simcha Sorin
of Moscow at 9 a.m. Saturday
at Adat Shalom Synagogue.
David has written to
Simcha, who is a top math-
ematics student in Russia.
Under threat of arrest by the
Soviets, Simcha celebrated his
bar mitzvah last January.
The Grahams spoke with
Simcha's father, Valery, by
telephone and learned that the
family received letters and ca-
bles from David, but their let-
ters to the U.S. did not get out
of Russia. David wears a
bracelet engraved with the
name of his Russian Jewish
twin.
Simcha's father is a
geodesist by profession but
works as a programmer. His
mother, Isabella, also is a pro-
grammer.
The Sorins applied for exit
visas to Israel in 1980, im-
mediately after the birth of
their second child. In 1981 they
received their first refusal with
the reason "emigration is in-
expedient because of distance
of kinship." In Israel they have
their uncle and aunt, the
brother and sister of Isabella's
mother, Sorina. Their names
are Kleiner Gabriel and
Kleiner Polina.
Since 1981 till 1986 the So-
rins regularly, every- half a
year, apply for exit visas to Is-
rael and regularly receive re-
fusals. The last one they got in
July 1986. They studied He-
brew and began to celebrate
the Jewish holidays, Shabbat,
and so on.
As The Jewish News went to
press, it was learned that the
Sorins were granted exit visas.
