The group meets regularly on Tuesday evenings, with one hour of instruction from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by request danc- ing from 8 to 10 p.m. There is an end-of-the month party, with refreshments. Who dances? "Everyone from 6 to 60," according to Sunny, both men and women from all walks of life. "Why not .9 to 90?," asks Uri. Beginners are always welcome in both groups. "I gear my instruction to the skills of the people who come each week," says Sunny. "Once they learn the Yemenite step, they can do almost any- thing." Physical ability is not impor- tant, although a good ear for music helps, Sunny points out. The group averages between 20 and 25, although "we some- times get as many as 40 on a fabulous night." Uri's Wednesday class, now two years old, is smaller, and he would like to see more new- comers. Like Sunny's, it is also open to the public on a "drop- in" basis. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., the first _hour is also de- voted to basic instruction, with more advanced dancing from 8:30 to 10 p.m. "On Wednesday evenings I like to concentrate on the 'oldies,' the traditional Israeli folk dances," Uri ex- plains. Sunny divides Israeli danc- ing into four basic categories: Chassidic, Arabic, Yemenite and modern Israeli, "which comes with a lot of interna- tional flavor." In her Tuesday night group, Sunny also tries to retain some of the older dances "so that they •don't get lost." In addition to providing rec- reation and good physical exercise, Sunny and her group have served as matchmaker for several couples, including Phil and Cheryl Lift and Scholomo and Linda Rabinowitz. Not everyone who comes is a dancer. Isaac Berger, "a friend of the group, who used to come and watch us dance," now is the official greeter and regis- trar for the Tuesday night group. "He enjoys us, and we enjoy him." Sunny concedes that Detroit has fewer Israeli dancers and dance groups than many other cities, a nucleus of no more than 80 or so devotees. "In some cities you can dance every night of the week." She also admits that Israeli folk dancing today "has me some- what disappointed. There is more international flavor put into the Israeli folk dances rather than what the true old Israeli folk dances used to be." She devotes approximately one-third of her session to these traditional dances. Both Segals agree that danc- ing is a form of communication. , CHILDREN'S MENU AVAILABLE FAMOUS STEAKS • Lobster Tails • Crab Legs • Steak Salad SEAFOOD SELECTION BANQUET FACILITIES AVAILABLE 6123 Highland Rd.
