Struma tragedy. The dosier of
his actions is more in his favor
than those which resulted from
obstructions he suffered in the
State Department.
Prof. Rose also contradicts
hiraselfinlater mentions of the
Welles' name.
It is inexcusable that one of
the most distinguished world
Jewish personalities of the
first half of this century should
not have been listed properly.
Shmaryahu Levin, who was
one of the most trusted of
Weizmann's associates, was
not Austro-Hungarian, as
birth-placed by Prof. Rose. He
was Russian-born and was
elected to the first Russian
Duma in 1906. The permission
for the election of the Duma
democratically was a ruse. It
was soon disbanded by Czar
Nicholas II.
Dr. Shmarya Levin's impor-
tant role in the Technion lan-
guage dispute in 1912 is prop-
erly recorded by Dr. Rose.
Levin and Ahad HaAm were
among those who resigned
from the Technion board when
it failed, as they had de-
manded, to approve Hebrew as
the language of the Technion,
not German or French, as the
Hilfsverein der Deutschen
Juden and the Alliance Israel-
ite Universelle advocated.
It is inevitable that this type
of biography should also be a
history of the era considered in
the life of the man portrayed.
In this instance it is much
more. It invites attention to the
triumphs, when such were in
evidence, and the blunders —
not by Jews alone but by their
fellow citizens in many lands.
And there were the prej-
udices, the anti-Semitic treat-
ments of Jews and their com-
munities.
It is the argument for
Zionism, the debates for the
adherence to the Jewish na-
tional dream in which he was
the master, that made Weiz-
mann the notable leader in the
advancement of the challeng-
ing Jewish cause. It is in the
achievement of this goal that
the new biography accom-
plishes the task of interpreting
Weizmann as the admired
tribute of his people.
Prof. Rose details Weiz-
mann's identification with Ar-
thur Balfour as well as with
editor Charles Prestwich Scott
of the Manchester Guardian.
They influenced the eventual
issuing of the historic Balfour
Declaration.
Weizmann and American
presidents and British prime
ministers are among the im-
portant recollections in_ his
active life.
Especially notable is the ac-
count of the conflict between
Weizmann and Theodor Herzl.
There is a special reference to
Herzl's comment on Weiz-
mann's leadership of the
Democratic Fraction and his
