Helping everyone in her de- termined manner, Bell ignores the piles steadily growing on the front counter; magazines, articles, newspapers, new books to be processed, and re- turned books that need re- shelving. In this library of 37,000 books, 1,500 un- catalogued Yiddish books, over 100 periodicals, a 45-drawer vertical file, and a large Jewish sheet music file, Bell and her assistant, Jean Levy, run a race with time and space. The children's room — one of the most inviting in the city — is decorated with a fanciful Noah's Ark mural and large cardboard cutouts of Bugs Bunny. The Midrasha library houses the Jewish community's largest collection. It is a com- munity library, a treasure trove for earnest bibliophiles, scholars, geneological resear- chers and students. Yet it is relatively quiet ex- cept for Sundays when Mid- rasha and United Hebrew School students of all ages come in, look through the books and mill around the front desk, waiting for the as- sistance of long-time librarian Congregation Shaarey Zedek Library, 27375 Bell Rd.
