ess to acquire his own radio
station and later that year be-
came a general partner with
his father and brother in the
purchase of WQRS.
Tanger takes an active role
in the operation of the radio
station. He makes sales calls,
gets involved in programming
and engineering functions and
joint activities with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra.
Tanger finds it is through his
work that he meets new people.
"I meet a lot of people just by
the nature of my business. I
can't think of a day that goes by
that I don't meet somebody
new. I meet a number of people
through contacts; people know-
ing that I'm new in town intro-
duce me to individuals."
Although he is not actively
involved in the Jewish com-
munity there is another ave-
nue in which he celebrates his
Jewishness. "Throughout my
experience at Boston College (a
Jesuit university where there
were only about 200 Jews on
campus), I started to view my
Judaism in the way I celebrate
being a Jew, as the way I led
my life and the way I respond
to other people that are not
Jews. How I interact with
other people is very important
to me in terms of my Jewish-
ness."
Tanger says the best way to
meet other people is to find
them through activities you
enjoy. "Find out for yourself
areas that make you happy and
then meet people in that fash-
ion . . . it's important to do
things that make you happy
and be in an element where
you're happy."
An admitted "button
pusher," Tanger flips around
the radio dial, listening to
equal parts of contemporary
and classical music as well as
news.
Ultimately, Tanger would
like to buy his own radio sta-
tion, possibly in Michigan,
which he would like to make
his base of operations. More
than that, Tanger would like to
stay in Detroit. "Detroit's
worked out real well for me.
The lifestyle you can create for
yourself in Detroit is spectacu-
lar. The people in the Midwest
are great."
