The Greater Detroit Chapter
of Hadassah and Midrasha
College of Jewish Studies will
co-sponsor a special spring lec-
ture series beginning March 12
at 10 a.m. at Hadassah House,
6030 Orchard Lake Road, West
Bloomfield.
The series will feature Dr.
Joseph Gutmann and Dr.
Tikva Frymer-Kensky. Dr.
Gutmann will speak on "The
Jewish Life Cycle — An Origi-
nal View" on March 12, 19 and
26. The series will focus on the
customs associated with birth,
marriage and death.
Dr. Gutmann is a professor
of art history at Wayne State
University and adjunct curator
at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Dr. Frymer-Kensky will
speak on "Women and Jewish
Law: Current Issues." She
teaches at the University of
Michigan, specializing in the
fields of women and religion.
Her lectures are slated for
April 2 and 9 at 10 a.m. Dr.
Frymer-Kensky will deal with
the system of Jewish law as it
relates to women and major
concerns confronting women in
Israeli society.
Refreshments will be served
at 9:45 a.m. There is a charge.

Rubin, co-chairman, Mid-

Dr. Harris Mainster has
been named chairman of the
department of surgery of
Botsford General Hospital.
Dr. Mainster has been a gen-
eral surgeon at Botsford since
the completion of his residency
training at Botsford and Zieger
Hospitals in 1964. A graduate
of the University of Michigan
in 1956 and Kirksville College
of Osteopathic Medicine in
1960, Dr. Mainster concluded
his internship at Art Centre
Hospital of Detroit in 1961.
His professional affiliations
include: American Osteopathic
Association; Michigan Asso-
ciation of Osteopathic Physi-
cians and Surgeons; Oakland
County Osteopathic Associa-
tion; American Association of
Abdominal Surgeons; board of
directors, Kirksville College of
Osteopathic Medicine, alumni
association and associate
examiner, National Board of
Examiners.
Locally, Dr. Mainster has
served on the boards of the
Jewish Community Center
and Hillel Day School. He also
served as chairman of the Pro-
fessional Health Division for
the . Allied Jewish Campaign.
He is involved in the Jewish

Midrasha Classes
At Adat Shalom

The Midrasha College of
Jewish Studies will offer sev-
eral adult studies courses at
Adat Shalom Synagogue, be-
ginning March 10.
The courses include: A Taste
of Hebrew, 7:30 p.m., A Taste
of Yiddish, 7:30 p.m., Israeli
Culture — The Encounter with
the New Land from 1920 to
1987 (in Hebrew), 7:30 p.m.
and Readings and Reflections
of Amos Oz: A Contemporary
Voice of Modern Israel, 8:30
p.m. There is a fee.
The planning committee in-
cludes Rabbi Efry Spectre,
Rabbi Gerald Teller, Irwin Al-
terman, Allan Gelfond, Sharon
Hart, Matilda Rubin, Edwin
Shifrin, Renee Wohl and Alan
Yost.

Prime Minister's Club and
Ambassador's Society of Trus-
tees of Israel Bonds.
For the past 16 years, Dr.
Mainster has donated consid-
erable time each summer
teaching and providing medi-
cal care in government and
missionary hospitals in third
World countries.
