Focuses On Arts
During March

The Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit
will be the scene of a Celebra-
tion of the Arts during March,
sponsored by the Jewish Cen-
ter and the Michigan Council
for the Arts.
The celebration begins on
Monday at 7:30 p.m. when
Seifu Lessanework, an Ethio-
pian Jew, will speak on "Life in
Ethiopia", at the main Jewish
Community Center.
Lessanework attended
Ethiopia University, finishing
with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
He then joined the Hilton In-
ternational Hotel/Restaurant
chain in Addis Ababa, where
he worked for 12 years.
He traveled to Israel and
several other countries for the
Hilton chain. He worked at the
Queen Elizabeth Hotel in
Montreal, Canada. He then
moved to New York where he
managed Windows of the
World, and finally came to De-
troit in 1982. In Detroit, he
managed the food and bever-
age areas of the Pontchartrain
Hotel for Chuck Muer.
In 1985, after leaving Muer,
he opened his own restaurant,
The Blue Nile, in Greektown.
On March 8 at 2 p.m., "60
Terrific Years of Song and
Dance" will be held, featuring
Festival Dancers, Tuesday
Troupers, The Very Young
Dancers, RC-22 Improvisa-
tional Group, Cathy Lichtman,
Marian Lee Sandweiss.
Dr. Hamid Banooni, an Ira-
nian Jew, will speak on "Life in
Iran" at 7:30 p.m. March 11 at
the main Jewish Center.
There will be a Purim carni-
val on March 15 and at 1:30
p.m. Corinne Stavish will per-
form Jewish folktales with
audience participation. At 3
p.m. Beth Dzodin accompanied
by her mother, Celia Dzodin,
will perform a Purim play, The

Mask of Queen Esther.

The Klezmer Tzvai will pre-
sent a Yiddish review 8 p.m.
March 21 at the Center, fol-
lowed by a wine-tasting party
featuring kosher wines.
Judy Goldstein will perform
on March 22 at 3 p.m.
Israeli folkdancing will be
spotlighted at the Main Center
on March 28 at 8 p.m. when the
Hora Aviv Dance Group
entertains.
Tots, Teen, Ta-Tes and
Tantes will perform in an in-
tergenerational program
March 29.
There will be a folk art ex-
hibit in the lobby of the main
Jewish Center featuring as-
sorted art and artifacts. Per-
sons who have folk art (kid-
dush cups, ketubot, candles-
ticks) to exhibit should call the
cultural arts department,
