The College of Literature,
Science, and the Arts and the
Program in Judaic Studies at
the University of Michigan are
sponsoring a variety of events
on the theme of "The Unfolding
of Jewish Music in America."
This conference is part of an
annual Forum Series which
was made possible through a
gift of the Shirley and William
R. Fleischer Foundation. The
first event will be a concert by
Theodore Bikel held at Rac-
kham Lecture Auditorium on
March 7, at 8 p.m.
On March 8, there will be
lecture-demonstrations pre-
sented - by two
ethnomusicologists, Prof. Kay
Kaufman-Shelemay, music
department, New York Uni-
versity, who will discuss "The
Unfolding of Jewish Music in
America: Syrian Tradition,"
and Prof. Mark Slobin, music
department, Weslayen Uni-
versity, who will discuss "The
Unfolding of Jewish Music in
America: Eastern European
traditions." These events will
take place at Rackham Assem-
bly Hall at 3:30 p.m.
Additional related events
include a brown bag lecture by
Prof. Shelemay, who will dis-
cuss "The Music and Liturgy of
the Falashas," on March 9, at
12 noon at 3050 Frieze Build-
ing, and a showing of The Jazz
Singer (1927) to be followed by
a discussion of Jewish musical
influences in the world of jazz,
led by Prof. Slobin at 7:30 p.m.
that evening in the Rackham
Amphitheater.

ance are free and open to the

To Hear Singers
Phyllis Bratt and Adele Mil-
ler will present a concert of
Yiddish, Israeli and English
songs at the pre-Purim party of
the Jabotinsky Society of

Gold Re-Elected
To Legal Committee
Edward D. Gold was recently
re-elected to serve a second
one-year term as the chairman
of the Friend of the Court
Advisory Committee.
Gold has been a member of
the committee since its crea-
tion by the State Legislature.
The committee is responsible
for reviewing matters handled
by the Friend of the Court
Bureau and recently recom-
mended to the bureau the
adoption of the new state wide
Child Support Guidelines. _
Yeshiva Gedolah
Bazaar Sunday
The Yeshiva Gedolah of
Greater Detroit Ladies Organ-
ization (YIGDAL) will have a
bazaar on Sunday at the
Yeshiva Gedolah building,
24600 Greenfield, Oak Park.
Hours are from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m.
The bazaar will feature all
new merchandise including li-
nens, clothing, jewelry, per-
sonalized items and leather
goods. Local home merchants
will participate as well. Hot
lunch and babysitting will be
available. All are invited.
