AT ITS NEW LOCATION
ON THE BOARDWALK
first new synagogue since
1945 opened in June, the
report states. But when a
number of young people held
informal meetings to discuss
Jewish culture, "the sponsors
were told to desist by the
police," said the report.
Jews fare somewhat better
in Czechoslovakia, where
there are two Jewish com-
munity councils, financially
supported and controlled by
the government, according to
the report, as well as
synagogues and a Jewish
museum in Prague.
Rumania, whose govern-
ment has permitted an active
Jewish community, suffered
several anti-Semitic incidents
last year, including demoli-
tion of a major synagogue by
the government and "anti-
Semitic overtones in two re-
cent publications," said the
report.
`Unborn Israelis'
Encouraged
New York — Reacting to a
Jan. 27 report from the Israel
ministry of health that legal
abortions are now being per-
formed in Israel at the rate of
almost 20,000 per year, with
an estimated 10,000 more il-
legal abortion annually, the
president of the National
Council of Young Israel,
Harold M. Jacobs, called upon
the Israel government to "offer
these women an incentive to
bring a new Israeli citizen into
the world equal to that offered
to Jews from other countries in
the world to come on aliyah. If
a single oleh is worth, on the
average, $50,000 in govern-
ment subsidies, mortgage
allowances, tax incentives and
services, then how much more
of an investment should be
made in unborn Israeli chil-
dren who are now being
aborted on such a huge scale."
Social Programs
Supported
New York — The officers
and the Board of Directors of
the National Council of Jewish
Women (NCJW), convened in
New York Jan. 12-14, ex-
pressed alarm at the continued
high incidence of pregnancy
among teenage girls. In light of
this, NCJW supports school-
based clinics or other means of
providing comprehensive and
accessible reproductive health
services for teens including re-
productive and prenatal care.
NCJW also issued a state-
ment which urges Congress
and the Administration to
safeguard social programs by
maintaining adequate fund-
ing.
