Seminar Probed
Women In IDF

Jerusalem — Wider oppor-
tunities exist for young women
in the Israeli Defense Forces
than are currently being
realized, according to partici-
pants in a study day held re-
cently at the Hebrew Univer-
sity of Jerusalem.
Prof. Galia Golan, chairman
of the Program on Sex Dif-
ferences in Society, said that
though the military was open
to expanded opportunities for
women soldiers, the soldiers
themselves arrive in the army
with the built-in images and
stereotypes of Israeli society as
to what their role should be,
and therefore are not them-
selves always receptive to the
new types of tasks that are
available to them. There also
•remains the problem of a
chauvinistic attitude on the
part of some commanders and
male soldiers toward them, she
contended.
Brig. Gen. Amira Dotan,
commander of the women's
army branch, stressed that,
like all modern armies, the Is-
raeli Defense Forces have an
ever-growing requirement for
personnel with a high level of
technological abilities, but few
girls receive a technological
high school education, and
thus are not prepared for spe-
cialized positions in the army
requiring such background.

Marriage 'Bias'
Is Encouraged

New York — The U.S. has a
strong need to "nurture a bias"
in favor of marriage, as well as
to initiate effective policies
that will minimize the adverse
effects of divorce on mothers
and children, according to the
assistant director of the Jewish
communal affairs department
of the American-Jewish Com-
mittee, speaking at a recent
symposium on Family Values
and Public Policy, held in
Washington, D.C.
Dr. Steven Bayme offered
these options currently being
evaluated by AJC's Task Force
on Family Policy for aiding
women and children in meet-
ing what often is a distressing
economic situation after a di-
vorce:
Delay final divorce settle-
ments until all issues are re-
solved; distribute assets
equally, including career as-
sets; base child support awards
on the basis of income-sharing;
vigorously enforce child sup-
port awards; continue child
support payments through
undergraduate college years;
provide continuing education
and job training for divorced
spouses; continue spousal
health benefits on an optional
paying basis.
