BIG FEATURE NOW in
the restaurant game is healthy
eating . . . and Rodo's Restau-
rant in Farrell's Shopping
Plaza, Southfield and 12 1/2
Mile, has been among the pack
leaders.
Almost everything at Rodo's
is homemade . . . either on the
premises or at the home of
owners Khalil and Zizi Abbadi
or her mother, Attiat "Tutu"
Shehata.
Rodo's is a very clean opera-
tion . . . with taboolee salad
(vegetables with cracked
wheat,) vegetarian plate of
mixed vegetables baked in
vegetable oil, eggplant, zuc-
chini, celery, potatoes, onions,
green peppers, carrots, green
beans and cauliflower is a big
favorite.
There are six types of chic-
ken preparations at Rodo's .. .
chicken breasts sauteed or
broiled, 1/2 chicken broiled,
baked or barbecue, and chic-
ken kebob . . . all from fresh
chickens . . . not frozen.
There's white fish, scrod,
orange roughy, small lake
perch, sea bass and shrimp.
Rodo's makes its own pita
bread . . . and own desserts. by
Zizi and "Tutu" . . . rice pud-
ding with peaches, baklava,
cream caramel from egg
whites, cakes and pies.
I recently had the great favo-
rite of sauteed chicken breasts
with fresh cooked vegetables
. . . and went away very satis-
fied with the fresh goodness it
offers.
Waitresses like Cheryl
MacFarlin and Narges Sakla
are efficient, courteous and
smilingly personable.
Since Rodo's changed owner-
ship, the result has been little
short of miraculously marvel-
ous . Although the prices
remain low, it is no longer just
a mediocre restaurant in some
strip shopping center . . .
Rodo's is freshness, cleanliness
and goodness rolled up into one
very nice package enjoyed by
more and more people each
day.
NON-ALCOHOLIC beers
now taste almost like the real
thing . . . At Armando's, Or-
chard Lake Rd. between 12 and
13 Mile, imported Barbican is a
big favorite . . . Ginopolis', 12
Mile and Middlebelt, sells a
doozy amount of imported
Guiness that so many of the
ballplayers who hang around
there like to drink.
For clarification sake, by the
way, the Ginopolis' sold by
Johnny and Pete was in Greek-
town . . . not the beautiful
locale on 12 Mile and
Middlebelt.
Pete Peponis, new manager
at Ginopolis' with Ernie
Palumbo, at one time worked
with Johnny at Topper's in
Dearborn . . . Pete was barten-

der while Johnny a busboy .. .
When Pete left for service,
Johnny took over as bartender,
and Molly Abraham, then a
Detroit News restaurant re-
viewer, called him number one
in the city.
NICKI'S TAVERNA that
opened in November of last
year on Beaubian at Lafayette
in Greektown is a second floor
standout that retains the
charm and character beauty of
turn-of-the-century Boyddell
Bldg . . . Rough timbers, 90-
year old red brick and
enhancement of Mediterra-
nean tile, Grecian urns and
live plants.
It is the former original site
of Dodge Machine Shop (Dodge
Bros. Engineering) from 1907
to 1919 . . . Same wood, same
steel beams where pulleys used
to do their daily chores.
Two hundred fifty are seated
upstairs in the charming res-
taurant with its full Greek
menu . . . Same windows as
Dodge Machine Shop . . . now
looking out at the Blue Cross/
Blue Shield Bldg.
Downstairs is Nicki's Pizza
with 200 seats . . . Two more
operations downtown also
have same full bar and carry-
out of Niki's already-
becoming-famous pizza.
The small chain is named
after Dennis Kalfalonos'
mother, Niki, who still over-
sees the kitchen at his full-
service restaurant . . . hidden-
behind a wall and waitress
counter where more Mediter-
ranean tile and brass rails are
seen.
Also named after her are the
four Greek salad dressings
manufactured by Nikki's . . . It
is only one of two in the nation
manufacturing authenic
Greek dressing . . . Other one is
in Massachusetts.
We had lunch there recently
. . . very pleasant, tasteful and
nostalgic . . . Dennis Horwatt
enjoyed shrimp creole and I
had a beautiful piece of white
fish . . . The portions are large
and prices low.

IT'S A NEW EXPERI-
ENCE for Taj Mahal Northern

Indian restaurant that made so
many friends while on 12 Mile
Road in Berkley for 11 years
. . . Only 50 seats then . . . and
parking in back for just 10 cars
. . . Now that Taj Mahal has
moved, there are 80 seats .. .
and enough parking for the
entire former block or two in
Berkley . . . The new Taj Mahal
has opened on Southfield and
12 1/2 Mile Road in Southfield
Plaza . . . at site behind Big
Boy . . . where previous Hello
Deli used to be.
