It was also during these
years in Bucharest where, in
spite of the recognition and
acknowledgment of her talent,
anti-Semitism crossed her
path occasionally, threatening
to stunt her musical achieve-
ment.
When the Cohn family re-
ceived permission to emigrate
to Israel in 1958, it was a
long-awaited dream come true.
Although the realities of life in
Israel made the adjustment a
difficult one, Horowitz's fam-
ily, reuniting with family and
friends who had preceeded
them to Israel, felt they had fi-
nally come home.
Horowitz continued her
music studies in Israel, work-
ing under eminent masters, in-
cluding Ilona Vincze, who was
herself a student of Bela Bar-
tok. She attended the Rubin
Academy of Music in
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv Uni-
versity, and in 1965, was sent
by the State of Israel to France
where she took part in the
Marguerite Long Piano
Competition.
She met and married Avrom
Dov Horowitz and, in 1969,
with their daughter Talya,
came to the University of
North Carolina, where her
husband pursued studies
toward a doctorate.
Settling into the intellectual
climate of this college commu-
nity, Horowitz began to teach
and was named Artist in Resi-
dence of the University of
North Carolina, eventually re-
ceiving a Master in Music Per-
formance degree.
Additionally, since her arri-
val in the United States,
Horowitz has had the opportu-
nity to give recitals at Alice
Tully Hall in Lincoln Center,
at Merkin Hall in New York
and at the American Univer-
sity in Washington, D.C.
Regarding her Jewish iden-
tity, Horowitz describes herself
as a traditional person. Her
home abounds with Jewish
ceremonial pieces, Hebrew
books, Jewish art and publica-
tions from the many organiza-
tions to which she belongs —
Hadassah, Young Israel,
Pioneer Women Naamat,
AMIT Women and the Ameri-
can Technion Society.
Horowitz's mother still lives
in Jerusalem, and when she
speaks about Israel, her eyes
light up and her voice becomes
more animated. "We'll return
to Israel. I want to grow old
there, with the people I know
and love." And of the many
hardships she has suffered
throughout her life — war,
family separation, hiding from
the Nazis, later, coping in a
suppressive regime, facing
anti-Semitism — Horowitz
says, "I would think these have
made me a better, more sensi-
tive musician." And when
Horowitz strikes the piano
keys, her appreciative audi-
ences are inclined to agree. ❑
