(2.6 English, and who has since ac- companied Leonid's sister to the U.S. Olga grins, remembering her first impressions, particu- larly her first trip to the supermarket with its bewilder- ing variety. "I could not believe the long line of cereal," she says. "And in boxes! Shopping took me hours. You had to > make a choice! For the first month, whenever I had the time I would go and just read boxes just to find what I needed. With seemingly characteris- tic determination, she devoted her first year here to learning English, attending day classes at the Jewish Community Cen- ter and evening classes at Oak Park High School. For Sergei, the opportunities to develop his interest in his Jewish heritage and to achieve his educational goals have been all that his parents had hoped. The "wonderful one- on-one instruction" he received in Hebrew and English at Yeshivath Beth Yehudah enabled him to quickly gain ground in his studies and, after transferring to Akiva Day School, to secure a place at the University of Chicago, where he is now in his second year. Relaxing comfortably with a glass of wine in his attractive new home, looking forward to a two-month visiting lectureship at London University, Leonid has not forgotten the less- fortunate refuseniks still in Russia. Helped by friends who had already come to the States, he works with the Friends of Soviet Jewry Information and Education Center to encourage people here to work for the re- fuseniks' release, and to make them aware of "what life is really like there, how real the problems are. "They are marked for life and their children have this mark against them too," he says. Recent indications of a softening Soviet attitude are •no reason, he believes, to relax the effort here. "My feeling is that Jews are considered a kind of 'hard currency' by the \Th Russian government. If there is a possibility of improving re- lations with the West and they want to do so, then it is a good moment to give some Jews as a down payment." But the mo- ment may swiftly pass, he be- lieves. The allocation of exit per- mits; he admits, "looks like a lottery," but "there is evidence that cases which attract the at- tention of the West have a bet- ter chance." Letter writing, to refuseniks and officials is one of the most effective ways to help. "People shouldn't be discouraged if the addressee doesn't receive it," he says. "Every letter which is written goes to Russia and goes to the KGB file. That is what is important. It helps." ❑ • • o k o /1°4' ) se csAc If you cannot leave your home this winter season, and you have painful ingrown, thickened nails, corns, calluses, and other geriatric or diabetic foot problems .. .
