Activists Plan
Protest At
Lawyers' Confab

New York (JTA) — Human
rights and Jewish groups
plan to converge on the
American Bar Association's
mid-year meeting in New
Orleans to protest the ABA's
ties to the Association of
Soviet Lawyers (ASL) which
protesters called an anti-
Semitic arm of the KGB, ac-
cording to reports last week.
The Task Force on ABA-
Soviet Relations, Inc., a
Phoenixbased group formed
specifically to oppose the ties,
has fought to dissolve a 1985
Declaration of Cooperation
between the ASL and the
ABA. The Task Force, some
of whose members are attor-
neys, branded the ASL a pup-
pet of the KGB whose attor-
neys were handpicked by the
Soviet authorities.
Members of the Jewish
community of Baton Rouge,
La., Ukrainian American
groups and the Task Force
members are among those ex-
pected to be represented at
the demonstrations in New
Orleans.
The Task Force will sponsor
a forum on ABA-Soviet Rela-
tions simultaneous with the
ABA convention and in the
same hotel, the New Orleans
Marriott.

rIbl Aviv (JTA) — The cost-
of-living index rose by 2.1 per-
cent in January, a smaller in-
crease than expected after the
10 percent devaluation of the
Shekel. The Finance Ministry
and the Employers Associa-
tion expressed satisfaction
but Histadrut predicted that
the index will rise con-
siderably in the next few
months and warned of a new
round of inflation, according
to reports last Monday.
The increase was led by
higher prices for fruits and
vegetables and public trans-
portation. But the price of
clothing was down and the
Finance Ministry's decision
not to raise fuel prices held
the index down.
The 2.1 percent rise was not
sufficient to warrant the pay-
ment of cost-of-living in-
crements to wage earners and
salaried workers, but econo-
mists said that even a .small
rise in the February index
would be enough, on a cumu-
lative basis, to require the
payment of increments on
salaries due March 1.
