Kedma is built on the site of
a disused stone quarry. The
JNF's mechanical equipment,
including heavy duty Johnson
caterpillar tractors and
bulldozers, excavated and
deepened the reservoir's walls;
giant motorized graders
leveled the storage basin and
steam rollers packed down the
crisp, earthern floor. The re-
servoir, which will be fully op-
erational by spring 1987, is
coated with materials to pre-
vent year-round ground seep-
age and the loss of water
through evaporation during
the hot summer months.
The Chai'un. Reservoir,
which the JNF recently began
excavating, is designed to
enrich underground wells by
damming up annual winter
flood waters which rage along
the Nahal Arava at the rate of
1,300 cubic meters per second.
(Israel's National Water Car-
rier flows at the rate of 40 cubic
meters of water per second.)
The 17-meter deep reservoir,
which should be completed by
winter 1987, will be one of the
largest dams ever built in this
country — holding back some 6
million cubic meters of water.
Every two to three years flood-
ing of the dry river stream,
Nahal Arava, causes wide-
spread havoc and destruction
to market fruit and vegetables
cultivated by neighboring
farming communities in the
region.
This coming year, as part of
Israel's celebrations to mark
the 100th anniversary of the
birth of David Ben Gurion, the
Jewish National Fund will
begin work to expand and de-
epen the reservoir at Kibbutz
Sde Boker in the central Negev
to which Israel's first prime
minister retired from politics.

Maccabi Club will have a meet-
ing to organize for the 1987
Maccabi Regional Games at 3
p.m. March 8 at the main
Jewish Community Center,
Shiffman Hall.
The regional games will be
played Aug. 16-19 in Cleve-
land, Ohio. Jewish youth age
11 to 16 are invited. Among the
activities in which they can
register are: boys basketball,
girls basketball, boys baseball,
girls baseball, soccer, tennis,
swimming, track and field,
racquetball and gymnastics.
Coaches and staff will be in-
troduced at the meeting and
explain the various activities.
Applications for tryouts will be
available.
