W

ith as many Israelis
as there are in
America today, you
are almost as likely to meet up
with one in New York or Los
Angeles as you are in Tel Aviv,
and that is exactly how Gloria
Mark of Oak Park met Natan
Zimet.
Gloria went to San Diego
after graduating from the Uni-
versity of Michigan to advance
her career in medical technol-
ogy. She attended a Yom
Ha'Atzmut party to meet the
Jewish community of San Di-
ego. "I was watching 'a per-
formance of an Israeli dance
troupe. They were terrible, and
a voice said to me in Hebrew,
"M'od norah, lo?" (really terri-
ble, no?) and, of course, I. did
not understand a word but the
face attached to the voice was
so cute, it really didn't matter
what language it was!"
Natan was in California on a
special program from the Is-
raeli army. He returned to Tel
Aviv, but came back to visit
Gloria. Eventually, she took a
leave of absence from her job in
California to visit Israel and
Natan. "Actually, my
girlfriend Irma Essick, also
from Oak Park, and I wanted to
travel in Europe; but the ac-
commodations there were very
uncomfortable. By the time we
reached Israel we were com-
pletely exhausted so we bum-
med around for two months,
eating and tanning, and went.
to an ulpan on Kibbutz
Hazoriah. Six months later,
Natan and I were engaged."
In the summer of 1982,
Gloria and Natan were mar-
ried at Cong. Beth Achim in
Southfield and returned to Is-
rael shortly after the wedding.

"The move was not as hard as I
thought it would be. Shipping
all of our belongings was dif-
ficult but Natan already hgd
an apartment in Herzliya so we
had a home. Also, I always felt,
and still do, that I am not with-
out options. I can always re-
turn to the United States.
Something that was a bit
foreign to Gloria was Israel's
policy on security. Natan
works with computers for the
army and a security check had
to be completed on Gloria.
"Since I'm an American, even
though I'm Jewish, I was
scrutinized very carefully,"
Gloria recalls. "They even
wanted to know my great
grandmother's maiden name!"
Gloria is the daughter of
Samuel and Rose Mark of Oak
Park.
For several years in Israel,
Gloria worked in her field at
Assuta Hospital in Tel Aviv
and Meir Hospital in Kfar
Saba. In 1985, Yaniv A-rye
Zimet was born and Gloria
switched careers to domestic
engineering. "In America
we've grown used to the idea of
working mothers and I also
thought I would return to work
after the birth of my son. -How-
ever, I realized that for the
$300 a month that I would
make, $250 would have to be
given to a baby nurse and it
wasn't worth the $50 to schlep
across town. Anyway, whoever
thinks that taking care of a
baby isn't working is 100 per-
cent wrong.
"We live 'right across the
street from a swimming pool
and Yaniv is learning to like
the water. We have a lot of fun
together but it is a full time
job."
Gloria is also involved in an
English-speaking post-natal
support group, and thrOugh the
Association of Americans and
