Cruise ships regularly ply the route. which they were dependent in ancient times. Long established as a fashionable resort, the village of Mykonos is laid out with a confusing web of cobblestoned streets which echo every sound with crystal clarity. Like brilliant sugar cubes, whitewashed houses are clustered around the harbor, windmills, and dazzling white churches with red tiled roofs. Boutiques sell strikingly colored weaves for which Mykonos has always been known. Crete's main town is Heraklion where the two principal attractions are the Archaelological Museum with the finest display' of early European ceramics in the world and Knossos, a palace excavated in early 1900s and partially reconstructed. Heraklion is fine for a visit, but for accommodations travel agents recommend Agios Nikolaos further to the east. Less than 20 years ago, Agios Nikolaos was just a small, attractive port surrounded by mountains. Now it is brimming with discos, bars and boutiques and hotels, like the famous Minos Beach Hotel. In fact, in the recent past, Yugoslavia has made every effort to upgrade its tourist facilities, and now, though this is no longer the budget destination it once was, there are vast modern hotel complexes along the Dalmatian coast.
