of spaciousness that work
well in smaller homes and
apartments. The clean
lines, muted backgrounds
and high impact accent col-
ors provide flexibility.
You could change the am-
biance of a room by chang-
ing the floor covering and
the colors of the accent
pieces. If the accent were
black, the image of the
room would shift from
being relaxed and open to
being sharply focused and
dramatic.
For design consistency, it
is important to have an
overall plan. Whatever
pieces you are buying
should have more than one
purpose. Could the armoire
in the bedroom be used as
a storage unit for the
television or stereo in the
den? Will the buffet in the
dining area have enough
compartments for storage
of files or the sound system
in addition to china and
linens?

Cooking Schools

Call our Director of Catering, Lynne Schwarz, for details.

s s a newlywed, you
A
not have yet ac-
quired extraordinary (or

even ordinary) culinary
skills. Thus, you might like
to enroll in a cooking
course, to learn the basics
and beyond.
How do you choose a
class? Cost is a considera-
tion. Some courses are ex-
pensive, others charge a
nominal fee, and a few are
free.
Here are some factors to
keep in mind when choos-
ing a class:
Is the teacher a certified
member of the Interna-
tional Association of Cook-
ing Professionals? This
guarantees that the in-
dividual is qualified to
teach and has achieved a
high degree of competence
in an examination.
Is the instructor a
specialist in his field?
What are your needs: us-
ing a microwave oven, basic
techniques, kosher cooking?
Are the classes demon-
stration only or "hands-
on"? If demonstration only,
there should be a large
overhead mirror to reflect
the total work surface.
Are there seats? Are
printed recipes provided?
Two hours is a long time to
stand, and copying a recipe
can mean mistakes at home.
How many students are
in the class? Fewer stu-
dents mean more
teacher/student time.
