The wedding sym- bolizes a sense of creating a shared history between the couple. Six months after their wedding, one couple told me, "We didn't think we would feel differently, but we do. Now we really know that we are together for life." But the spiritual element of marriage goes beyond the realization of per- manence in the relation- ship. The spiritual compo- nent of marriage includes God's presence not only in the wedding, but in the couple's relationship. This is not a new idea; the rab- bis knew the importance of God in the marriage. To the rabbis, the spiritual ele- ment of marriage was the sanctification of the cou- ple's love by invoking God's presence under the chuppah. The wedding ceremony itself brings this dimension into play. "Blessed art thou, 0, Lord, who rejoices with bridegroom and bride." Somehow, when a couple in- vokes God's blessing they see their relationship in a broader and more perma- nent context. One couple said, "By standing under the chuppah, we felt more secure that God was behind us. We feel we are sharing our lives for a purpose now rather than when we were living together." The spiritual element can give a sense of higher purpose to a relationship that living together cannot. At best, living together before mar- riage can provide the groundwork for such feel- ings, but only through mar- riage can the couple ex- perience the sacred aspect of their relationship. lbday's social climate challenges us to rediscover the sacred dimension of marriage. We have to teach our young people that mar- riage is the ultimate ideal for commitment in a rela- tionship. If not, marriage will cease to be the pin- nacle of love and commit- ment between a man and a woman, and will, instead, simply signify a legal for- mula to satisfy societal norms in regards to having children. This issue poses a major challenge to the Jewish community as we strive to maintain the continuity of our people. We, the com- munity, must reach out to couples who live together and teach them that mar- riage is an event that will enrich their lives. Living together as an alternative to marriage cannot provide them with the permanence and purpose that marriage adds to a relationship. The key element is the perma- nent commitment, and public affirmation of it in a religious context, which serves as the lynchpin of marriage. This is the spiritual element of mar- riage today. ■ First Nights Continued from Page 31 Two years old this summer, the Novi Hilton is a pastel paradise with modern, beautifully appointed rooms and friendly, accommodating service.
