The most popular look this season is a spray — a cascade of silk flowers and pearls which can be worn asymmetrically. "Flowers on combs are the most popular look," says Ann Patrick. Some other options are a coronet, worn like a wreath; a mantilla, lace veiling cascading to the shoulders; a Juliet cap; or even a Cleopatra look. The bridal consultants can always suggest a headpiece to complement your gown and hairstyle. Custom bridal gowns designed just for your wedding are available at Creations by Pollak in Farmington Hills and Pamela Swift in West Bloomfield. "There is no such thing as impossible," states Pollak-Zimberg, whose family has designed gowns for forty years. "Every gown is different," says Pamela Swift. Swift works with the customer designing styles to fit the bride's figure and together they pick out the fabric and the detailing. The bride has a few fittings with the first fitting in muslin. Recently Swift designed a tea-length gown in white Ivory peau d'ange lace is shaped into a contemporary bridal gown. Puff sleeves frame the open, curved neckline; molded bodice skims to the hipline. The tea-length skirt is gathered in the back. "Mother of the bride gowns are very sophisticated this season with lots of lace, ruffles and beaded tops," adds Ann Patrick at Kays. Debbie Pollak-Zimberg gives two tips for mothers in the wedding party: They should decide on the same hem line, and they should never wear the same color, just the same tone. Look for a trunk showing in early March at Ray & Ida's in Southfield for mother of the bride gowns. Owner Ray Epstein sells many gowns for mothers as well as understated bridal gowns and gowns for second marriages. "Black and white weddings are very stylish," states Fiona Hermiz, of Fiona's in West Bloomfield. She notes that in some weddings, the bridesmaids wear black gowns. "I don't know how long this look will last, but it is popular," she adds. For bridesmaids, many dresses are in pastels of pink, yellow and green. All white weddings are still popular in Detroit. When all the dresses complement each other, the wedding party is a spectacular and elegant sight. N
