It remained for a later wave of pioneers to carry out, physi- cally, what these spiritual pioneers were only able to speculate about. With the re- settlement of the Land of Israel beginning at the turn of the century, the festival of Tu b'Shevat took on new signifi- cance. Redemption was no longer a matter of speculation by dreamers, but an actuality accomplished by physical ef- fort in draining the swamps of the Galilee, greening the des- ert lands and rebuilding what had been a backwater province of a dying empire. It is with the rise of modern Zionism that there arose the very tangible act of redemption of the Land: the planting of trees, physi- cally, in the Land of Israel and, albeit at a distance, the par- ticipation by Jews around the world by donating funds speci- fically for use in reclaiming the Land of Israel. This return to the Land has forced the Jewish people to re- examine what the great classics of Jewish tradition have to say, not only about flora and fauna, but also how a land can be intensively farmed and built up, yet at the same time,_enriched and conserved.
