Turks In U.S.
Aid Synagogue
New York — The winter
issue of ATA-USA, the bulletin
of the Assembly of Turkish
American Associations, is car-
rying a two-page article about
the Sept. 6 terrorist massacre
at Neve Shalom Synagogue in
Istanbul in which 22 Jews were
killed.
The article gave a complete
history of the incident, Tur-
key's strong relationship with
its Jewish minority and reac-
tions among Jewish leaders in
Israel and the U.S.
The article was followed by a
one-page appeal for funds to
restore the synagogue.

New York (JTA) — A Soviet
Jewish Prisoner of Con-
science has been released ear-
ly from a labor camp and the
Soviet Supreme Court may
review the case of another,
Lynn Singer of the Long
Island Committee for Soviet
Jewry said last week.
Singer said Soviet Jews
told her by telephone that
Roald (Alec) Zelichonok of
Leningrad was freed halfway
through his three-year term
at a labor camp in the Kazakh
region and put on train to
Moscow. Zelichonok, a 50-
year-old electrical engineer,
was sentenced in August
1985 for "defamation of the
Soviet state and social
system." He and his wife
Galina first applied to
emigrate in 1978.
The case to be considered
by the court is that of Vlad-
mir Lifschitz, 45, his family
recently was told. The
mathematician and econo-
mist from Leningrad was
sentenced last month to three
years in a labor camp in the
closed far eastern region of
Kamchatka, which Singer
said meant that governmen-
tal permission was required
for his wife, Ana, to visit him.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Re-
agan Administration will not
permit American companies to
sign long-term contracts with
the Israel Air Force in connec-
tion with the Lavi fighter
plane project which Washing-
ton wants Israel to abandon;
Haaretz reported recently.
The U.S. maintains there is
no point in entering long-term
contracts while Israel exam-
ines alternatives to the Lavi
which have been proposed by
the Pentagon. The Lavi, a pro-
totype of which had its first test
flights last month, is Israel's
second generation jet combat
aircraft.
