Shirman Out
Of Hospital

Jerusalem (JTA) — Soviet
immigrant Michael Shirman,
whose battle against leukemia
captured headlines worldwide,
has been released from the
Hadassah-Hebrew University
Medical Center after receiving
a bone marrow transplant.
Doctors at the medical cen-
ter were guarded in assessing
Shirman's chances for total re-
covery after he received bone
marrow donated by his sister,
Inessa Fleurova, in a. complex
transplant operation Jan. 3, al-
though they described his ini-
tial response to the procedure
as "amazing" and said that his
white blood cell count is nor-
mal.
But Dr. Shimon Slavin, head
of the medical center's bone
marrow transplant depart-
ment, cautioned that in dif-
ficult cases such as Shirman's
the disease is likely to return.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Insult was
heaped on injury for Israel's
hundreds of thousands of bas-
ketball fans, and other view-
ers, when striking technicians
blacked out television Tuesday
night after cutting short the
live, via satellite transmission
of the East-West basketball
championship tournament
from the United States in the
wee hours of Tuesday morning.
The technicians said their
wildcat strike was to protest
the earlier suspension of Zion
Swiri, chairman of their work-
ers committee for "pulling the
plug" on the basketball match.
Swiri said he was simply abid-
ing by Histadrut's agreement
with the broadcast authority
management stipulating the
maximum number of hours the
technical staff should work.
Israel television normally
goes off the air at midnight.
The basketball game ran into
overtime. Swiri closed down
the transmission at 12:30 a.m.
local time, ten minutes before
the game ended, infuriating
the fans who were kept in sus-
pense over its outcome.

Plastic Firearms
Act Endorsed

New York — The American
Jewish Committee endorsed
the Terrorist Firearms Pre-
vention Act, intended to deal
with the dangers posed by plas-
tic firearms.
Introduced in the House of
Representatives by Rep.
Robert J. Mrazek, the act
would ban the manufacture or
importation of any firearm
that is not readily detectable as
a firearm by the standard secu-
rity equipment commonly used
at airports.
