the toothpicks that were
supposed to hold the hors
d'oeuvres together weren't
sufficiently windproof. The
tops kept blowing off until
the serving people figured
out that they could hold
the sandwiches down by
putting rocks on their lids.
They tasted good but they
were certainly very unusual
looking sandwiches.
I have officiated at many
other outdoor weddings,
but one that stands out in
my mind was blessed with
two dogs that, apparently
captivated by the romance
of the occasion, began to
mate directly in front of
the chuppah. I got so rat-
tled by the dogs that I
forgot the names of the
couple I was marrying.
Though it happened at an
outdoor wedding, now, even
at indoor weddings, I
always write down the
names of the bride and
groom on a little slip of
paper and put it in my rab-
bi's book, even if I know
the bride and groom very
well, just in case. I also
keep my eye out for dogs.
Sometimes, people go out
of their way to make wed-
dings memorable. At one
such wedding that comes
to mind, the father of the
bride was the president of a
distinguished cooking
school and had placed on
exhibit a bas-relief portrait
of his daughter, carved in
multi-colored cocoa butter.
A wedding that might
have been memorable in-
volved a man and a woman
who had met one another
and me when we were all
running together. They
wanted me to officiate at
the end of a 10K race, with
all of us dressed in our run-
ning shorts. I had heard of
such weddings before (ex-
changing vows while leap-
ing out of airplanes, under
water, on the backs of
elephants, etc.) and agreed
that it was a lovely sen-
timental idea — but it was
not my sort of thing.
Trying to make a wed-
ding memorable doesn't
work. It only ends up being
a little tacky. A truly
memorable wedding has to
just happen. It becomes
memorable through its own
internal energies.
In the course of conduct-
ing weddings over the
years, I have come to a
number of conclusions I
would like to share, in the
hope that they will be of
assistance to people who
are in the process of plan-
ning weddings:
Israel's First Law of Wed-
dings: While wedding dates
are often advanced, they
