THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
The following profile by
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion is part of a series on the
people who benefit from the
Allied Jewish Campaign.
Irit Waltz and Galit
Sabag, ages 16 and 18. Give
them a guitar and an audi-
ence and Irit Waltz and
Galit Sabag are in heaven.
Born in Israel to parents
who emigrated from Poland
and Morocco, the two girls
visited Detroit recently as
part of the Orot Haschuna
entertainment troupe that
toured several U.S. cities
under the auspices _of Proj-
ect Renewal. Coming to De-
troit was particularly excit-
ing for them because Irit
and Galit are from this
community's sister city of
Ramie.
The girls feel that the
Project Renewal program
has given them oppor-
tunities they only dreamed
about before. It all began
when each joined their local
Renewal singing group at
Ramle's Fisher-Taubman
Community Center. They
were later encouraged to
audition for Orot Haschuna
and became two of 12 young
adults in the national
troupe. A highlight of their
Detroit visit was a special
performance at the Jewish
Home for Aged's Borman
Hall. "It was a mitzvah,"
says Galit, adding that resi-
dents and performers alike
were moved to tears. Now
that their tour is over, Irit is
looking ahead to completing
high school and Galit is be-
ginning her army duty.

The program.
partnership program of the
people of Israel and Jewish
communities worldwide,
Project Renewal 'was in-
itiated in 1978 to help dis-
advantaged Israelis take
control of their own lives. It
has involved building com-
munity centers, renovating

neglected areas, educa-
tional programs, medical
assistance, youth groups
and cultural activities.
Project Renewal has "twin-
ned" over 230 Israeli
neighborhoods with Jewish
communities in the U.S.
and elsewhere, and is coor-
dinated by the Jewish
Agency for Israel.
